The Morgan 1,100 Sq Ft Duplex: Understated Luxury and Architectural Aesthetics on Conduit Road
Located on Conduit Road in the Mid-Levels, the heart of Hong Kong's bustling metropolis, "The Morgan" enjoys an exceptional geographic advantage. For this 1,100-square-foot duplex, the design team aimed to reflect both the vibrant environment and the client’s unique personality. By establishing metal and wood as the primary materials, the design utilizes the clean lines of architectural aesthetics to cultivate an atmosphere of understated, noble luxury.
Spatial Layout and Foyer Reconfiguration: Embracing the Cityscape
The duplex is clearly divided into active and quiet zones across its two levels: the lower level houses the communal areas, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, and maid’s room, while the upper level contains the private quarters—the master bedroom, the daughter’s room, and two bathrooms.
- ⎯Elevated Views: The living and dining area boasts an impressive ceiling height of approximately 3.3 meters. Paired with expansive windows, the space offers unobstructed, sweeping views of Victoria Harbour and the cityscape.
- ⎯Foyer Optimization: The designers cleverly reconfigured the entrance foyer. The area under the stairs, originally designated as the maid's room, was transformed into a large shoe and storage cabinet featuring a natural wood finish, significantly maximizing functional storage.
Living and Dining Area: A Geometric Dialogue Between Metal and Wood
The communal area utilizes a strong contrast of materials to define the living and dining zones while maintaining overall visual harmony.
- ⎯Living Room Visual Focus: The living room features a striking accent wall made of gold metal and special paint that extends seamlessly from the wall to the ceiling. A concealed door is cleverly integrated on the right side of this wall, providing practical access to the maid’s room.
- ⎯Dining Room Geometric Aesthetics: In stark contrast to the living room, the dining area features a full wooden accent wall intricately divided into geometric triangles by sleek metal lines, showcasing modern architectural beauty. Paired with an elegant marble dining table, the space unconventionally employs a statement floor lamp as the primary light source rather than a traditional pendant light, creating a unique and sophisticated dining atmosphere.
Staircase and Private Quarters: Natural Textures and Soft Ambience
Ascending the stairs from the foyer to the private sleeping quarters, the design team uses light and material transitions to settle the mood.
- ⎯Staircase Illumination: The high-ceilinged staircase is adorned with plain, slightly reflective wallpaper and a distinctive pendant light. The interplay between the wallpaper's subtle sheen and the lighting enriches the transitional atmosphere.
- ⎯Daughter’s Room Design: Located next to the master suite, the daughter’s room carries on the home’s consistent natural wood finish. The design deliberately avoids overly childish themes, ensuring a timeless aesthetic that will mature alongside the child.
- ⎯Master Suite Details: The master bedroom emphasizes softness and relaxation. The wardrobe doors are crafted from a combination of leather and metal lines, adding a warm, tactile softness to the sleek modern design.
